Fishing is a popular water sport enjoyed by many vacationers and sports enthusiasts around the world. There five kinds of sports fishing. They are bait fishing, spin fishing, trolling, fly-fishing, and ice fishing. Of the five, fly fishing is the most challenging and difficult. Fly fishing is an ancient angling method dating back to the second century in Europe. Many variations came about and publications on techniques starting in the seventeenth century. Today, popular fly fishing destinations abound in the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Mongolia and Russia. Fly fishing is a method that uses fish lure that mimics small and light insects. These baits are called flies. Most flies are made of feathers, synthetic fibers or animal furs attached to a hook. Basically, there are five categories of flies. The dry fly is a fish lure that tries to imitate insects that float on water although some flies also mimic small animals like mice and snakes. The wet fly mimics insects under the surface of the water. The terrestrial fly imitates land insects like moths, butterflies, grasshoppers and beetles that have fallen into the water. The streamer fly is made to look like injured fish as some species of fish attach other fish. The nymph fly mimics insects in their pupa or larva phase. The basic equipment to need for fly fishing includes the line, rod and reel. The line is typically made of nylon that is braided and an outer layer slick coating so that it can travel easily when it is thrown. Fly line varies in length and weight depending on the distance that the fisherman intends to cast. The rod basically extends the line so that the fly fisher can get the fly bait to the fish. Their lengths vary, usually from 7-14 feet and the most common materials used to make a rod are bamboo, fiber glass and graphite. Different kinds of rods are also used depending on the type of fish to catch. Hence, the fly fisher should use a different rod to catch Tuna or Tuna. The reel holds the fly line. It also serves as a counterbalance to the rod and slows down the fish caught. There are many different sizes for reels depending on the intended species of fish to catch. Most modern reels are made from aluminum although cheaper reels that can bought are made from cast mold. Another gadget used for fly fishing is the leader. It is commonly attached to the end of the fly line and is actually a clear monofilament. A leader is usually used when the end of the fly line is too large to attach a fly. Many tour and adventure packages include fly fishing. Fly fishing is perfect for nature lovers and environmentalist because the site for flying fishing is in picturesque rural areas that have mountains, trees, rivers and carpet of flowers for backdrops. Fly fishing is so popular that a movie directed by Robert Redford and starred by Brad pit “A River Runs Through It” was made. |
